I went out for a beer on Friday night with a good mate who’s the church warden at his local church.
For those of you who don’t know, a church warden gets paid nothing and whatever the job description is, it ends with “other duties as assigned”.
As you can see, it’s largely faith based so a cultural “fit” is key.
Over the last few weeks he’s been confronted with some health challenges, the misfortune of drinking beer with me, a few other personal challenges and it was all topped off last Wednesday with the fridge deciding to catch fire (it basically flared, fizzled and then left a horrible stink in the house).
As he said last week “somebody really sh%& in my Wheaties” (he’s English so I guess that’s another figurative cross to bear).
Through all of this, he had some ramped up church duties, some big Christian holiday upcoming I think.
And not a hint of bailing or asking God “why me?”
If it were me, I’d quit and call it constructive dismissal as I got forced out by the Big Guy.
He literally only does the job because he wants to (my mate, not God), it’s a perfect summary of what employee engagement is as it allows self actualization, security and belonging.
A perfect example of getting the engagement thing right and you can move mountains. Well, you might not but your boss will do it for you. Plus part oceans, turn water into wine and various other senior manager type tasks.
