The current recruiting market is “different” shall we say, it’s incredibly frustrating for everybody. People on the market for way too long, accusations of lowball offers, rescinded offers, you name it.
I’m just not certain that we can put all of this at the feet of corporate greed.
While I am sure that there are companies that are leveraging the current economic uncertainty to go value shopping as it were, I’d put all of this down to a number of factors, this is far from an exhaustive list and I’d be interested to read your comments.
1. Social media has put everything under a microscope. I don’t have the statistics but it would be interesting to see how much has really changed with the support of statistics as opposed to me spending way too much time on LinkedIn. Consequently, every instance of wrongdoing has become amplified.
2. The make up of the workforce is reshaping. A big chunk of the workforce is approaching retirement age. While a big chunk has already retired, people are working longer as they realize that their retirement nest egg was laid by a sparrow not an albatross.
3. Couple this with a 45-55 cohort that before COVID had careers on the ascendancy and had the brakes put on them for a couple of years and have seen careers flat lining a bit as the job market reshaped.
4. COVID. It’s ok, it’s not coming back. But the economic uncertainty during COVID has lingered AND I think companies realized that they can do more with less as they didn’t hire to capacity, waiting for a bounce back that came and then realizing that they can keep doing more with less.
5. Much of this wraps up into more people on the market which of course just creates a snowball effect to exaggerate the time it takes to find something.
6. And then all of this wraps up to how easy it is to both post to and apply for a job. We hear so much about candidates getting ghosted but so little about the 300 candidates that applied for a job and are just clogging the application process up for companies. Hiring managers and HR didn’t all of a sudden get rude, many just don’t have the cycles to deal with it.
What else?
